Slips, trips and falls

The majority of trips and falls are caused by obstructions in walkways and preventing these accidents is often simple. Please follow the guidance below to help avoid any incidents.

External walkways

Check walkways are suitable for pedestrians and haven’t been closed off for maintenance. If cleaning or maintenance is taking place, please follow signage as these will advise you on any changes to the walkway and possible alternative routes.

Walkways must be kept clear at all times to ensure they safe for everyone to use. Please ensure you leave no trailing wires, no obstructions or household objects like pushchairs, scooters or plant pots on a walkway as these can cause trip hazards. If objects are obstructing a walkway, please report this to us immediately.

If any lights are out, or you notice an uneven surface on a walkway in your building or estate please report it to us.

Slips and trips in your home

Slips and trips can cause serious injuries, especially in the home where we spend a lot of our time. Here are some tips to prevent slips and trips at home:

  • Keep your floors clean and dry: Regularly clean up any spills, liquids, or debris from your floors. Use a dry mop or towel to clean up any spills immediately.
  • Use non-slip mats: Use non-slip mats in areas prone to wetness or spillage, such as in the bathroom or kitchen. Ensure that the mats are securely fastened to the floor.
  • Keep your walkways clear: Make sure your walkways are clear of any clutter or obstacles. This includes removing loose carpets, rugs, and any other tripping hazards.
  • Ensure adequate lighting: Ensure that your home is well-lit, especially in areas such as hallways and staircases. Use bright bulbs and replace them as soon as they start to dim.
  • Wear appropriate footwear: Wear shoes with non-slip soles, especially when you're walking on wet or slippery surfaces.
  • Fix any loose or uneven flooring: Fix any loose or uneven flooring in your home, as this can be a tripping hazard.
  • Install handrails: Install handrails on stairs, in the bathroom, and anywhere else where you may need support.

By following these tips, you can help prevent slips and trips in your home and ensure a safer living environment for you and your family.
