Charging e-bikes and e-scooters safely

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming more popular and most are powered by lithium-ion batteries which can be charged in the home.

It is important when charging e-bikes and e-scooters, you do so safely to avoid a risk of a fire starting and putting your families, neighbours and homes at risk. The London Fire Brigade has reported visiting several fires in the past few weeks where faulty e-bikes or e-scooters have were to blame.
 
When charging it’s important to:
 

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and always unplug your charger when its finished charging.
• Ensure you have a working smoke alarm where you charge your e-bike or e-scooter.
• Charge batteries whilst you are awake and alert. Do not charge batteries over night while you are asleep or away from home.
• Always use the approved manufacturers charger for the e-bike or e-scooter. Buy an official replacement charger from a reputable seller.
• Do not cover chargers or battery packs when charging as this could lead to overheating.
• Do not charge batteries or store your e-bike or e-scooter near combustible or flammable materials.
• Do not over charge the battery.
• Do not overload socket outlets or use inappropriate extension leads.

 
Safely storing your e-bike or scooter:
 

• Avoid storing or charging your e-bike or e-scooter on escape routes or in communal areas. If there is a fire, this could affect people’s ability to escape.
• Store your e-bike or e-scooter in a cool place. Avoid storing them in excessively hot or cold areas.
• If not going to be used for extended periods of time, follow manufacturers guidance for the storage and maintenance of the lithium -ion battery.

 
Damage to and disposal of lithium-ion batteries
 

• Batteries can be damaged by dropping them or crashing your e-bike or e-scooter. Where the battery is damaged, it can overheat. Check your battery regularly for any signs of damage and if you suspect it is damaged it should be replaced and should not be used.
• If you need to dispose of a damaged or end of life battery, don’t dispose of it in your household waste or recycling. These batteries, when punctured or crushed can cause fires in bin lorries, recycling and waste centres. Your e-bike or e-scooter manufacture may offer a recycling service. Alternatively check with your local authority for suitable battery recycling arrangements in your area.
