Clean Air Day 2018

Thursday 21 June is Clean Air Day, and it’s a good reminder for us to think more about the impact of air pollution in our communities and to our health. There are plenty of ways to reduce the amount of air pollution you’re exposed to.

In our homes

It’s easy to forget about air pollution when we’re inside buildings or just at home. On average we spend around 90% of our time indoors though, so indoor air quality is really important.

To reduce air pollution in your home, you can do things like:

  • Use less energy, by switching off lights and only putting the washing machine on with a full load;
  • Change the way you do the cleaning, like keeping dust levels low and using fragrance-free cleaning products can help;
  • Open the window when cooking or using cleaning products, to improve the air flow.

Visit the Clean Air Day website to find out more ways to improve air quality in your home.

Outdoors

The main causes of air pollution outside are driving cars, not maintaining cars well, emissions from deliveries and open fires and stoves.

To reduce the impact of air pollution on your health, you can:

  • Walk or cycle to school or work, if you’re able to;
  • Go down quieter streets if you’re walking or cycling, where you can breathe in less polluted air;
  • Avoid strenuous exercise when pollution is high.

Visit the Clean Air Day website to find out more ways to reduce and avoid air pollution when you’re out and about.

In our communities

Have you had a look at what your local council is doing to improve the air quality in your local area?

Here are some examples:

  • Councils in Hertfordshire are working together to tackle air pollution. Take a look at Hertfordshire County Council’s website to find out more.
  • Camden Council are asking local residents, schools and businesses to pledge that they will take action towards Clean Air for Camden. You can find out more about the pledge and the work they’re doing by clicking here.

Take action this #CleanAirDay.
