Budget Bytes: Affordable Broadband Options

Since 2020, Origin has been working with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to install fibre networks in our buildings. So far, we’ve brought fibre broadband to over 2,000 existing homes.
For many people—especially since the pandemic—broadband is as essential as electricity or water. But we know it can be expensive and often comes with long contracts.
The good news? Many ISPs offer something called a Social Tariff. This is a discounted broadband package for people on certain benefits. If you or someone in your household receives Universal Credit, you will likely qualify.
Social Tariffs – What You Need to Know:
- Available for both fibre and standard broadband.
- Cheaper than standard broadband packages.
- Set-up should be free or very low cost.
- If your provider offers one, you can switch to it at any time without paying a fee.
- The price won’t increase during your contract.
- You can leave the tariff at any time with no early exit fees.
- Some providers offer monthly rolling contracts, so you don’t need to commit long-term.
Current prices range from around £10 to £23 per month, depending on your needs. Before signing up, speak to the ISP about what you use broadband for (e.g., streaming, working from home, gaming) so you get the right package for you. And remember—different providers have different deals, so it’s worth shopping around.
