Connecting older residents over a cup of tea and cake

We recently launched a project as part of ‘We Are Ageing Better’ for anyone aged 60 or over to reduce isolation amongst older residents in St Pancras and Somers Town, with the help of a cup of tea and some cake. We Are Ageing Better is a two-year project funded by the Big Lottery managed by Origin Housing as part of ‘Ageing Better in Camden’.

The idea is that the recipient of a ‘Cream Tea in A Box’ will invite a neighbour round for a cup of tea and a chat with the aim of developing networks and friendships to reduce loneliness and isolation. The project provides each participant with a box containing everything they need to share a cream tea, and hopefully a good chat, with someone locally.

We officially launched the project on 17 December at the St Pancras & Somers Town Living Centre Christmas festival and have started distributing the ‘Cream Tea in a Box’ packs, with the aim of at least 100 Cream Tea in a Box interactions taking place in St Pancras and Somers Town by Easter. The project builds on the success of the ‘Cream Tea Club’, a monthly meeting of friends and neighbours, initially set up by Origin Housing, but now run self sustainably by older residents in the area.

For more detail visit We Are Ageing Better blog about the initiative.

Finally, thank you to our partners from the Francis Crick Institute and Keepmoat who’s contributions helped make this project possible.
